WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SERVICE YOUR BIKE?

Bike Servicing

Simply to protect your investment and make sure it has a long and ‘happy’ life!  Your warranty will depend on your bike's service record. Forks and shock must be serviced frequently according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Call us to discuss what you might need to do to protect and care for your investment to ensure trouble free riding and to comply with the manufacturer's warranty.

We are experts in servicing and re-building suspension bikes and can service most quality forks in house. We keep a database of each rider's suspension set up so that we can prepare your bike for you. However, it is best to have the set up done personally each time that the bike is serviced. Your weight or riding style may have changed.

The first service on a new bike from us is free of charge providing that it is done within six weeks of purchase. If you are riding a lot bring it in after the first few weeks. The first free service is essential for the longer term care and warranty of your bicycle.

We work on all types of bike obviously specialising in the bikes that we sell but we are also experts in servicing (and carry parts for) Specialized, Canyon, Trek, Cube and Lapierre.

Bought a bike on-line or in a box?  Let us build and safety check it for you.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SERVICE MY BIKE?

Servicing is an essential to ensure the efficient running of and the longevity of a bicycle. It is also a requirement of any manufacturer’s warranty.  Of course, these are a generalisation and many factors many cause the service intervals to increase or decrease. (Do you clean it properly? Has it been a wet year? Have you increased/decreased mileage)?

Road bikes

Every 12 months.  As there is less wear on road bikes it is essential to check chain wear, brake pad and rim wear lest you forget. We can do this free of charge.

Commuter and leisure bikes

Every 12 months.  If the bike is used as a regular utility vehicle (commuting to work regularly through all seasons and weathers) once every 6 months.

Mountain bikes

Every 6 months.  If your mountain bike is used more leisurely and in drier conditions then every 12 months.

Regular riders and racers (twice per week, all conditions)

Your bike will need regular attention. In extreme winter conditions, a service after a few hard session or races may be the best way to ensure perfect performance. Riding on the North Downs is fun but the all weather trails are hard on your bike. New brake pads can wear out on one wet weekend but they may last a year on the South Downs. As a tip, thorough and meticulous cleaning followed by adjustment, tuning, possible dismantling and reassembly may prevent the need for servicing after each “hard session”.

Forks & Shocks (seals and clean)

  • Fox Fork - every 30 hours
  • Rock Shox forks - every 60 hours
  • Fox Shocks - every 18 months
  • Rock Shox shocks - every 18 months

Full suspension linkages

Once every 12 to 24 months. 12 months if used regularly or you are tall (more leverage) and/or heavy.

WHY WE LOVE BIKES HOSED CLEAN

Hosing your bike WILL result in bearing failure!

Water damage. Bearings are usually made of hi-tensile steel which will rust when exposed to water or damp air. Bearings are usually protected by grease and the grease is protected by a seal. If water gets past the seal the bearing will need changing. Often the lowest priced and highest prices bikes are the most vulnerable. Rain and washing your bike can cause water to get into the seals. Hosing your bike will almost certainly cause bearings to be damaged. Jet washing will wreck it in one go. Bearings will need replacing or servicing regularly. MTB external BB bearings typically last 6 - 12 months with heavy use. Some MTB Press-fit bearings may only last 3 months with regular wet weather use.

Hose your bike and you will need it servicing, thank you very much!
