Road cycling

For road riders the Chamonix Valley is set in the heart of the Alps with its opportunities to ride the famous Cols: Col de La Colombiere, Col d'Aravis, and Joux Plane. Every June sees the famous "Time Megeve Mont Blanc" (a cyclosportive endurance event) and in September the "Houches Hard" (a mountain time trial race).

Mountain biking

Check out this "youtube" clip of the Downhill in Les Houches more video (French national champions)

For mountain biking there are about 3,700 metres of vertical between the valley and Mont Blanc with the highest lift at 3,842 metres that means miles and miles of steep, technical single track to satisfy the hungers of even the most hardcore downhillers. In practise the best riding is off the many téléphériques (gondolas) that ring the valley. Six ski stations surround the village and lift access to any of them is only a short spin away. Trails descend in all directions and offer a wide variety of riding. For a full article on the area for mountain bikers from dirtworld.comclick here.

Chamonix is really opening up for mountain bikers, just check out all the pictures that are appearing in almost every mag issue these days. Chamonix has two permantent DH runs in Le Tour and Les Houches has both DH and XC permanent courses.
